«For all the boys in the world» by maria laura fernandez berro
We chose this tale
Juan on the shore
Juan has no last name. Juan is Juan.
He’s been sleeping on the sidewalk for about two hours. He looks like dogs.
The sun burns his face. He wakes up.
Above his town, he borders a dream: the house, a cup of milk, a caress.
Juan, who is Juan, wants to forget sadness and loneliness, so he leans into the shade, which looks like a handkerchief in the afternoon.
Something, on the edge of the dream, tells him that a new time is about to begin.
A voice that comes from the shadow says: «Hope».
Juan who is Juan believes and follows the voice as if it were a river of life.
There is barely a dime in his pocket.
The voice grows and quenches your thirst. The voice is the wind that comes and sings.
Juan walks fast and follows the thread of voice that is the river on the shore of his sadness.
«Hope», he spells it.
«Hope,» say others.
«Hope», they all build.
Juan, from the shore, clasps his hands, gives thanks and laughs.
